What We Do

The Environmental Services function coordinates delivery of the many day-to-day services required for community living such as water, sewer, garbage and recycling collection, and street lights.

Staff handles inquiries relating to works and services including applications for utilities, latecomer agreements, grant applications, and administration of the sewer agreement with Westbank First Nation.   The Engineering Section also works closely with other services to review applications for subdivisions, variances, rezoning and building permits. As well, Engineering is also responsible for fire protection and the Regional Rescue programs.

Public Works looks after the operation of the Westside Residential Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre at the site of the now closed Westside Landfill.  We also are responsible for the ongoing process of closing the landfill (Link to Westside Landfill Closure information), Westside Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility, as well as five Water Systems. It is also responsible for the Liquid Waste Management Plan and the Central Okanagan East Liquid Waste Management Plan adopted during 2009.

The Regional Waste Reduction Office is also housed within Engineering Services and is responsible for garbage collection in the Electoral Areas, the Regional Recycling program and aspects of the Solid Waste Management Plan.

How We're Doing?

Since 1999, a number of areas have been tracked to provide a benchmark and indication of how our Waste Management programs are performing.  Here's how we're doing in the areas of Solid Waste, Recycling and Hazardous Waste.
