Why does my dog need a license?
- It is the fastest way to get your dog home, especially if he or she gets out and
is injured. Our field officers have access to license information 24 hours a day,
7 days a week. Tattoo information is very useful in case a collar falls off or is
removed, but it can only be accessed by the veterinarian or agency that created
it and only during their regular business hours. Micro Chipping has similar limitations.
- Licensing information such as the number of dogs in the area is used to help determine
what services (i.e. park land) may be required in the region. If only a third of
the actual number of dogs are licensed, the end result could be only a third as
many services being available.
- License revenue helps fund important programs in the region such as the Spay and
Neuter Program operated by the Kelowna SPCA, and the Dog Control function of the
Regional District.
- It is the law! In the Regional District of Central Okanagan
Dog Regulation and Impounding Bylaw No. 366, it states "3.
No person shall own, keep, harbour or have in his possession any dog unless a license
therefore, under this by-law, has first been obtained." If they are not,
the owners may face a $75.00 fine
($100 in
2010) or a $50.00 surcharge
($100 in
2010) if their dog is impounded
without a license. As well, the Livestock Protection Act of British Columbia states
"3 (1) A person must not keep a dog unless a valid and subsisting
license has been issued for that dog under this Act or under a municipal bylaw".
