Storm Drain Marking Program Yellow Fish Road!
This Central Okanagan Storm Drain Marking Program is designed to heighten public
awareness of the fragility of our aquatic ecosystems. Many of the animals that rely
on these ecosystems require clean, healthy lakes, rivers and streams. By marking
storm drains with yellow fish, we encourage people to protect our water system.
Why mark storm drains?
The Storm drains are marked to remind people that surface water that flows off roads,
parking lots and driveways, flows directly into our streams. This water may accumulate
fertilizers, pesticides and other harmful chemicals if we are not careful. If everyone
allows a little fertilizer, a little carwash detergent, or a little motor oil to
run into a storm drain, it can all add up to toxic levels for fish and other aquatic
life.
You can help! Protecting these waterways and keeping them clean
means our fish are a lot healthier and happier.
What is involved?
- Volunteering time to paint Yellow Fish symbols on the road beside storm drains.
- Volunteering time to hang brochures on local residences and businesses doorknobs.
- Volunteering time to have fun!
