Recycling - Depots

General Information

Four recycling depots are available for disposal of extra materials, or for residents who are not on the curbside recycling collection program (such as apartments and homes on First Nation Lands).  Recycling Depot Locations  and Bottle Depot Locations and Computer and Electronics Recycling

Materials delivered to recycling depots must be separated.  What can be recycled at the Recycling Depots?

Coloured plastic containers, all plastic flower pots and trays, sheet plastic and plastic bags are accepted at depots for recycling.  You may also recycle all your glass containers at the recycling and bottle depots.  Plate glass is being accepted at a cost of $30 per tonne by Metro Waste Paper Recovery, 144 Cambro Road off Sexsmith.

Materials delivered to depots must be separated.

  • Kirschner Road
    1988 Kirschner Road
    Open daily from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm (Bottle depot on site open until 5 pm)
    Closed December 25 and January 1

  • Glenmore Landfill
    Located on Glenmore Drive, 8 km north of Hwy 97
    Open Monday to Sunday, 7:30 am - 4:45 pm
    Closed December 25 and 26, January 1 and Good Friday

  • Westside Landfill
    Asquith Road, off Shannon Lake Rd.
    Open daily from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
    Closed December 25 and January 1

  • Metro Materials Recovery Recycling Depot
    144 Cambro Road, off Sexsmith
    Open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
    Closed weekends and holidays (December 25, 26 and January 1)
     
  • Transfer Stations
    Traders Cove and North Westside Road residents may take their sorted recyclables and household garbage to the their transfer stations.  The Traders Cove station is located off Westside Road and is open during the Winter months, Wednesday from 6:30 am to 10:30 am and Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Summer hours are each Wednesday from 6:30 am to 10:30 am and Sunday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.  The North Westside station is located at Sugar Mountain on the Whiteman Creek Forest Service Road.  It operates each Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.  Link to Transfer Station Information

What can be recycled at the Depots?

Tin Cans

  • all tin cans
  • empty and rinse
  • labels ok
  • no beverage containers (return for refund)

Corrugated Cardboard

  • clean cardboard
  • no wax or plastic coating
  • flatten boxes

 

Aluminum

  • foil and food containers
  • empty and rinse
  • labels ok
  • no beverage containers. (return for refund)

Boxboard & Heavy Paper

  • cereal box type cardboard, brown envelopes, paper bags, cardboard, egg cartons, gift wrap, etc.
  • flatten boxes and remove liners
  • no waxed, plastic coated cartons or foil gift wrap.

Glass Jars & Bottles

  • all glass jars and bottles
  • all colours
  • empty and rinse
  • labels and lids ok
  • no windows, mirrors or china
  • no cookware or drinking glasses

Books & Magazines

  • all magazines, catalogues, hard cover and paper back books
  • no plastic binders

Newspapers

  • all newspapers and flyers, including all inserts and ad mail
  • do not bundle

No. 1-7 Plastic Containers

  • all plastic containers with #1 - 7 recycling symbol (simply remove lids, rinse and flatten)
  • all plastic film like grocery bags

Writing Paper

  • all white, neon, coloured paper and envelopes
  • all computer paper, labels and envelopes with windows
  • no carbon paper, used tissue, or paper towels
  • all papers and corrugated cardboard are not accepted as garbage. Please recycle

Phone books

  • all phone directories

Bottle Depots

Glass containers may be recycled at local bottle depots.  Return your beverage containers for refund at one of the following locations:

    Open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Saturday

  • Winfield Return-it Centre:
    Lakewood Mall
    Highway 97 north at Oceola Road
    Open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Saturday
    Closed Sunday and holidays

You can also return beverage containers to most retailers. Retailers often limit the number of containers accepted for refund.

Computer and Electronics Recycling

On August 1st, 2007 the BC Government and Encorp launched a province-wide Return-It Electronics Program for the safe and responsible recycling of computers, printers, monitors, fax machines and tv's.  In the Central Okanagan there are two locations:

  • Boucherie Bottle Depot:

  • Battery Doctors
    1972 Windsor Road: 860-2866
