Recycling - Other

Many items can be reused or recycled from eyeglasses to propane tanks.  Check out the Okanagan Reuses website if you are interested in buying, selling or swapping items valued at under $100.  Link to www.okanaganreuses.com

You may also want to link to the resources of the Recycling Council of BC and its easy to use, searchable, Recyclepedia online database. You'll find a link right on the front page of the Council website.

Batteries/Cell Phones

Cell phones can be returned to their place of purchase or at most electronic retailers.  For a current list see http://www.recyclemycell.ca/dropoff.php.  The Kelowna Food Bank also accepts them (250-763-7161).

Non-rechargeable batteries may be recycled at some retail locations.  Please check with your retailer whether non-rechargeable batteries are voluntarily accepted for recycling and:

Recycling depots for rechargeable batteries can be located by searching www.call2recycle.org or contacting the Regional Waste Reduction Office at 250-469-6250.

Bottle Depots

Glass containers may be recycled at local bottle depots.  Please return your beverage containers for refund at one of the following locations:

  • Boucherie Bottle Depot:

    Open 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Saturday

  • Columbia Bottle Depots

You can also return beverage containers to most retailers. Retailers often limit the number of containers accepted for refund.  Milk and milk substitute containers can be returned to the Boucherie Bottle Depot and Winfield Return-it Centre. Glass containers may also be recycled at these local bottle depots.

Computer and Electronics Recycling

On August 1st, 2007 the BC Government and Encorp launched a province-wide Return-It Electronics Program for the safe and responsible recycling of computers, printers, monitors, fax machines and tv's.  In the Central Okanagan there are two locations:

  • Boucherie Bottle Depot:

  • Battery Doctors
    1972 Windsor Road: 860-2866

Metro Waste Paper Recovery (250-491-2242) will accept plate glass dropped off at their location at a cost of $50 per tonne.

London Drugs will take back Styrofoam packaging from products it sells (see www.greendeal.ca/recycle.htm )
